Joe Macrae
Joe Macrae is founder, Chairman & CEO of Mlegal Consulting, Inc. in the San Francisco Bay Area/Silicon Valley region (founded in 2001). He is also a co-founder and Chairman of Macrae Roxburgh Appleby in London (co-founded in 2009). Joe co-founded ZMB (now HaysLegal) in 1991 and sold the company in 2000. Joe oversaw the growth of that business from a start-up to a 60 person-plus recruiting firm which was consistently ranked as one of the top two in the U.K. for quality of service and reputation. Joe moved into the legal recruiting field in 1988. Prior to that, he qualified as an attorney in the U.K. and practiced corporate law with Herbert Smith in London and Hong Kong. Joe is a trusted legal recruiter and consultant for some of the most prominent partner-level attorneys in both the U.S. and the U.K. He frequently meets and consults with leaders of Am Law 100 & 200 and Global 100 law firms in the U.S. and the U.K. Joe has worked extensively for U.S. and U.K. law firms and corporations at the highest levels and lectures in the U.K. and U.S. on a range of issues, including law firm mergers, compensation structures, and the attraction and retention of partners.

Daren Wein
Daren Wein is a Shareholder with Mlegal Consulting and has practiced with the company since 2004. He focuses his practice on partner-level law firm searches conducted in the United States and internationally with an emphasis on strategic law firm expansion in California, England and Asia.

Oft quoted in legal newspapers as a recognized expert in the attorney search process, Daren utilizes both his long-established contacts with the decision makers at law firms and companies as well as deep Mlegal relationships to gain otherwise unavailable access for his candidates. Daren’s deep understanding of changing market conditions, specific law firm priorities, and individual firm and partner personalities allows him to counsel candidates about which options best match their skills and goals. With over a decade of experience at his disposal, Daren adroitly facilitates the process of lateral exploration from early diligence through move with absolute discretion and confidentiality.

A Silicon Valley native, Daren practiced as a tax attorney for nearly five years prior to becoming a legal recruiter. After earning his LL.M. in 1998, he joined the corporate department at Berliner Cohen in San Jose where his practice focused on start-ups and privately held businesses. Thereafter, he joined Nossaman, Guthner, Knox & Elliott in San Francisco to handle M&A transactions for major regulated industry clients. At Nossaman, he also was involved in numerous real estate transactions for one of the nation’s largest employee pension plans.

Daren graduated with a degree in History from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1993. He earned his J.D. at Pepperdine University School of Law and finished his legal class work at the University of Washington with an LL.M. in federal taxation.
