Roy Strom cited CLP Faculty Director David Wilkins and G. Mitu Gulati’s 1998 article, “Reconceiving the Tournament of Lawyers: Tracking, Seeding, and Information Control in the Internal Labor Markets of Elite Law Firms,”  “about the difficulties large law firms have monitoring, training, and promoting” lawyers, in a story about Jones Day’s “black box” compensation system and BigLaw promotion. Strom writes: “Since it’s virtually impossible for partners to retrace all of the work an associate did to research a given topic, Wilkins and Gulati write that firms evaluate associates by relying on personal evaluations.” Read the full article here.
