Insight December 15, 2022

In a webinar on December 6, 2022, Dr. Heidi K. Gardner, program chair of the Smarter Collaboration Master Class at HLS Executive Education, discussed key research, case studies, and takeaways from her new book, Smarter Collaboration: A New Approach to Breaking Down Barriers and Transforming Work, which she co-authored with Ivan Metviak. Explaining what is meant by smarter collaboration (in short: the deliberate bringing together of the right people at the right time to achieve stellar results) and how it built on the ideas introduced in her Washington Post best-selling book, Smart Collaboration (2017), Gardner dove into key insights drawn from her original research, including stats on the relationship between revenue and collaboration, the uptick in patents with more than one inventor, and more. “Innovation is a team sport,” she says in the webinar. How does this extend to law firms? For Gardner, smarter collaboration allows each person to play to their strengths, and ensures that lawyers are getting enough advice and expertise from outside their domains to do their jobs well.
